What is Satellite Broadband UK?

Satellite Broadband UK is a trading name of Broadband Wherever.

Broadband Wherever have been supplying Satellite Broadband solutions throughout the UK & Europe now for many years, and are also one of the only officially recognised resellers over different platforms.

How fast is your system?

We can offer services and download speeds of up to 22Mb, and upload speeds of up to 6Mb. Lower service levels will also be available and these will offer lower throughput speeds. All services provided by us are subject to our Fair Access Policy (FAP).

Can I install it myself?

Installation is possible if you have a good degree of DIY skills. However the dish alignment is critical, and needs to be more precise that a TV aerial or Sky dish. As such a misalignment of the antenna can affect the throughput speeds. For this reason we would recommend installation is carried out by one of our fully trained installers.

Do I need a telephone line?

Our service does not require the use of a telephone line.

Are there any minimum requirements for computers?

Not normally, the satellite system can connect to any PC, MAC or laptop providing there is an embedded network card installed. Or you can connect using wireless with the addition of a suitable wireless router.

Can I use wireless at home with Satellite Broadband?

Yes you can integrate a wireless router with our satellite broadband systems. The router does need to be an Ethernet Router for connection to the satellite modem. Many people will have ad ADSL router possibly from a failed or poor ADSL connection. The ADSL routers will not provide the right connection to the satellite.

Can I watch Television with the same dish?

The Satellite systems we supply are designed for data transfer, and do not include TV reception, but in some instance the addition of an additional clamp and LNB, which can be aligned to another satellite will enable you to receive TV.

Can I use on demand TV / Catchup TV?

Our services will support Iplayer and catch up TV such as 4OD. Some streaming mediums specifically Netflix may experience some buffering due to the configuration at the main server.

UK IP addresses are only available to UK residents.

Is Satellite Broadband suitable for online gaming?

This really depends on what type of games you are playing.

For instance, games that are considered “turn-based” (Chess/Solitaire/Civilization/Facebook games etc.) will be suitable as the latency of the satellite connection will most likely not have a detrimental effect to this experience. 

With more action-based games or any game that depends on reaction times (Counter-Strike, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty etc.) then satellite based services may not be entirely suitable due to latency.
 
 

Do you offer email services?

Experience has shown most customers already have their own email address which they would like to keep. Our services do support all web based mail services such as Hotmail, Gmail, and MSN etc.

In some instance if you an alternative email address, we have found that some hosting companies and email providers will not allow you to send email through their network if you are using a satellite based service. In this case we have our own dedicated SMTP server, which we can give you access to, to enable you to send emails. We do not provide or recommend third parties services for this function.

Can I use VoIP with Satellite?

Certain free VoIP service such as Skype already work with Satellite Broadband. We will also be introducing soon a dedicated VoIP service which will allow our customers to use the internet connection to make regular telephone calls.

How do I know if Satellite is for me?

If you live in a “Not Spot” and your only means of accessing the internet is dial-up, or you have a poor ADSL line speed then a satellite based product is the ideal solution. As the service does not depend on telephone lines, and is not geographically dependant, it offers high speed, always on connection where ever you are.

How Much does it cost?

Our latest products offer fast satellite broadband for less than £0.50/day depending on your chosen service level.

Are there any limits on how much data I can download?

All of the Satellite services are subject to a Fair Access Policy (FAP). The idea of the FAP is to maintain quality of service for all customers on the network. Each service level is given a threshold, this will be the amount to data you are able to transfer in any given time period. If you exceed this threshold then you are moved to what we affectionately call “The Naughty Box”. At which time you will see a significant reduction in speed across your connection. If you find yourself in the naughty box, you can either consider an upgrade of service or the purchase of a volume booster. A call to the office always helps as we can discuss usage level in more detail, and help you decide on the best way forward.

Can I check my own data usage?

Yes, once you become a customer of Satellite Broadband UK, you will be given your own dedicated customer portal, with usernames & passwords. In this portal you can access you own data charts which will show you how much data you have transferred within the different time scales of the FAP.

Technical Questions

Why does a ping give a slow response over Satellite?

In the first instance the satellite is based in a geostationary orbit approx. 36,000Km above the Equator. So any command of this type does have a little distance to cover on the round trip and as such, you will normally see a ping time of around 600ms

Secondly, a ping command is also considered low priority, and all other applications will be processed first. As there is no acceleration applied to the ping command, this can sometimes cause increased ping times or even a time out. Ping is therefore not a reliable test for connectivity or speed.

How big is the dish?

The new dish being used for the KA-Service is expected to be around 76cm. This is a reduction in size of the larger 1m dish used for the Ku-band service.

How stable is Satellite Broadband in bad weather?

Satellite services as with all types of RF transmission are affected by weather conditions. The aim here is to ensure that you the customer do not notice the effect of the weather on the signal. Our newest products use a clever technology called Adaptive Coding & Modulation (ACM) which enables the system to automatically react to the effects of rain fade. This gives the network higher reliability in adverse weather and limits the noticeable effect on the QoS.

Are the IP addresses Routable?

With the consumer services these are supplied with non-routable IP addresses. This means if you are looking to set up a remote log in to view CCTV cameras or for home workers to log into your office server then you will require our professional services, which all come with a fixed public IP address.

Can I run a VPN connection over the Satellite?

There are lots of VPN services and applications available on the market, and as yet we have not been able to test every application. If you are looking to run VPN applications we suggest you call one of our dedicated support team for more information.
